1 April 2021, Thursday - Do you know why geese stand on one leg? We were curious about this because it seems that more geese stand on one leg in Minnesota and Wisconsin than in all of the central and southern states combined. Started researching around the turn of the year. Our hypothesis was that air and water temperatures played a significant role coupled with the timing of the vernal equinox. We were mostly correct. We left out one major factor though - the crested barking turtle (CBT). Crested barking turtles are just coming out of hibernation in Minnesota, Wisconsin and southern Manitoba and Ontario as the ice clears from the lakes. And as it turns out, their favorite food is geese feet. CBTs are so rare and so stealthy, they have never been photographed in the wild, at least nothing more than dark blurry smugs near an unfortunate and retreating goose. We set up a blind near our neighborhood lake however were unsuccessful in capturing the CBTs coming out of hibernation this year. Maybe we’ll have better luck next year.

27 April 2021, Tuesday - A healthy looking raccoon came ambling through the yard early this morning. Thought you might like to see it - please see the critter cam video below. By the way, the last post was on April Fools Day. You guessed it - the world does not yet have a crested barking turtle. And geese stand on one leg because… well, we guess that they just want to. We’ve noted that sometimes they stand one-legged when it’s cold outside, sometimes when it’s hot, sometimes when it’s sunny. Sometimes close to evening. And it goes without saying, no geese were harmed in the creation of the last blog post. Have fun and smile when you can.

27 May 2021, Thursday - My goodness, it has been some time since deer have been captured by critter cam - November 27 to be exact. Below is a clip of three bucks that strayed through just before sunrise yesterday. Notice that they have fuzzy looking antlers? According to Wikipedia, “Velvet antler is the whole cartilaginous antler in a pre-calcified growth stage. Velvet antler is covered in a hairy, velvet-like ‘skin’ known as velvet and its tines are rounded, because the antler has not calcified or finished developing.” Enjoy the video.

7 June 2021, Monday - We had a rare treat a couple of mornings ago: A red fox was captured by critter cam in daylight. The camera remains ready to record until we turn it off in the morning and the fox was earlier than we were. Not sure if it was the same fox that visited on the January 2nd, 2021. Have a wonderful day.

19 June 2021, Saturday - We’ve heard that crows (in this case, American crows) are rather curious in nature. One showed up to take a close up look at our camera this morning just in case their might be a tender morsel near by. Hope you enjoy the video.
